Ahmed Akbar was born on February 15, 1952, in Islampur, located in the heart of Old Dhaka. Raised in a family that valued education and service, he was the youngest among five children. His father served as a legal professional at the Dhaka High Court, providing a household environment guided by discipline and civic responsibility.

From an early age, he demonstrated a strong interest in learning and personal growth. After completing his early education, he enrolled at the University of Dhaka and earned a degree in Business Studies. While pursuing his academic goals, he also engaged in athletics and student activities, which helped him develop leadership and teamwork skills.

The First Steps into the Business World

He began his professional journey in 1978, entering the service industry. At the same time, he began exploring commercial trade within the domestic market. These early ventures provided him with valuable insights into the dynamics of local businesses and the broader economic landscape.

His work during this period was characterized by steady effort and meticulous observation. He studied markets, understood supply systems, and built a reputation as a reliable and disciplined entrepreneur.

Entering Real Estate with Purpose

A significant breakthrough came when he established East West Property Development (Pvt) Ltd. The company was created to meet the growing demand for structured residential housing. Within a short time, it became known as “Bashundhara Housing” and stood out for its professionalism and clear development goals.

This real estate venture marked the beginning of a larger vision—one that would eventually lead to the creation of a multi-industry business group. The success of the housing initiative served as a strong example of what organized private development could achieve in Bangladesh.

Formation of a Business Group

Following the success of his real estate venture, he laid the groundwork for the Bashundhara Group. He strategically expanded into industries such as cement, paper, steel, LP gas, dredging, food processing, and shipping. Each new area of focus was developed through careful planning and long-term investment.

Over the years, the group grew to include nearly three dozen companies. This growth was managed with a clear understanding of risk, capacity, and the need for professional systems and processes. His leadership ensured that all companies operated under defined structures and shared a consistent vision.
